Hijama is a therapeutic process of removing impure blood from the body.
It is one of the forms of medical treatment recommended in Shariah.
The Messenger of Almighty Allah, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and Blessings of Almighty Allah Be Upon Him), performed hijama on multiple occasions.
During the battle with the Jews at Khaybar in the 7th year of Hijrah, a Jewish woman prepared meat laced with deadly poison and presented it to the Messenger of Almighty Allah, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and Blessings of Almighty Allah Be Upon Him).
This was narrated by Imam Al-Bukhari.
When the Messenger of Almighty Allah, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and Blessings of Almighty Allah Be Upon Him), tasted the meat, the poison affected him.
He performed hijama to remove the effects of the poison from his blood.
(“Shama’il” by At-Tirmidhi)
On another occasion, the Messenger of Almighty Allah, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and Blessings of Almighty Allah Be Upon Him), injured his leg.
Possibly due to a blood clot, he performed hijama on his leg.
(“Mishkat”, p. 389)
The Messenger of Almighty Allah, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and Blessings of Almighty Allah Be Upon Him), said:
“Jibreel (peace be upon him) repeatedly urged me to practice hijama to the extent that I feared it would become obligatory.”
(“Jami’ul Wasail”, p. 179)
Hazrat Anas (may Almighty Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Almighty Allah, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and Blessings of Almighty Allah Be Upon Him), said:
“The best medicine is hijama.”
(“Shama’il”, Chapter on Hijama)
Before undergoing hijama (cupping therapy), follow these important preparation steps to ensure the procedure is effective and safe:
1. Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water a few hours before your session, but avoid drinking excessive amounts just before the procedure.
2. Avoid Heavy Meals
Refrain from eating heavy or fatty meals at least 2 to 3 hours before the session. A light meal is recommended if necessary.
3. Avoid Stimulants
Do not consume caffeine or nicotine before your session as they may affect blood circulation.
4. Rest and Relax
Get enough rest the night before, as being well-rested helps your body respond better to the therapy.
5. Cleanliness
Take a shower before the session to ensure good hygiene, as the skin should be clean and dry for the procedure. Avoid applying any lotions or oils.
6. Dress Comfortably
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to areas where cupping will be performed.
7. Disclose Medical Conditions
Inform the practitioner about any medical conditions, medications, or recent surgeries to ensure safety.
8. Avoid Exercise
Avoid strenuous activities or workouts immediately before the session to keep your heart rate stable.
After undergoing hijama (cupping therapy), follow these important aftercare guidelines to maximize its benefits and ensure proper recovery:
1. Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water to help flush out toxins released during the session and aid recovery.
2. Rest and Relax
Avoid strenuous activities and heavy workouts for at least 24 hours to allow your body to heal.
3. Avoid Cold Exposure
Keep warm and avoid cold environments or taking cold showers immediately after hijama, as your body may be sensitive.
4. Avoid Heavy or Fatty Meals
Eat light and healthy meals, focusing on fruits, vegetables, and easily digestible foods.
5. Keep the Area Clean and Dry
Avoid touching or scratching the cupped areas. Keep them clean, but refrain from applying lotions, oils, or scented products for at least 24 hours.
6. Avoid Caffeine and Stimulants
Skip coffee, tea, nicotine, and other stimulants as they may affect circulation and detoxification.
7. Monitor for Reactions
Mild bruising, redness, or tenderness at the cupping sites is normal. However, if you experience excessive pain, swelling, or signs of infection, contact your practitioner.
8. Avoid Intimate Activities
Rest your body by avoiding intimacy or any physically demanding activities for a day.
9. Wear Loose Clothing
Prevent irritation by wearing loose and breathable clothing that doesn’t rub against the cupped areas.
10. Maintain a Positive and Calm Mindset
Meditation, prayer, or light relaxation techniques can support the healing process after hijama.
Hijama (cupping therapy) is generally safe when performed by a trained professional, but it can have some temporary side effects. These side effects are usually mild and resolve within a few days. Here are the most common ones:
Common Side Effects
1. Bruising and Red Marks
• Circular marks or bruises are common due to suction. They usually fade in 1 to 2 weeks.
2. Mild Pain or Soreness
• The skin may feel tender where the cups were placed.
3. Fatigue or Weakness
• Some people may feel tired after the session due to the body’s detox response.
4. Dizziness or Lightheadedness
• Blood circulation changes can cause temporary dizziness.
5. Skin Irritation or Itchiness
• Dryness, itching, or slight irritation may occur on the treated areas.
Less Common Risks
1. Infection
• Rare, but possible if proper hygiene is not followed. Using sterile equipment minimizes this risk.
2. Scarring
• Wet cupping (with incisions) can leave small scars if the cuts are too deep or healing is slow.
3. Low Blood Pressure
• Temporary drops in blood pressure may cause fainting or weakness.
Serious Side Effects (Rare)
• Excessive bleeding or swelling
• Persistent pain or signs of infection like redness, heat, or pus
How to Reduce Risks
• Ensure the procedure is done by a qualified practitioner.
• Follow proper pre- and post-treatment care guidelines.
• Inform your therapist about any medical conditions or medications.
Hijama side effects are usually mild and manageable when performed
Manual therapy is a hands-on treatment used to relieve musculoskeletal pain and improve joint mobility. It includes techniques like massage, joint manipulation, and mobilization. While generally safe when performed by a trained professional, it can have some side effects. Here are the most common ones:
Common Side Effects
1. Soreness and Muscle Stiffness
• Temporary discomfort in the treated area is normal and usually resolves within 24 to 48 hours.
2. Fatigue
• Feeling tired or lethargic after a session due to muscle relaxation and changes in circulation.
3. Headache
• Some people may experience mild headaches, especially after neck manipulation.
4. Increased Pain
• A temporary increase in pain can occur before improvement is noticed.
Less Common Risks
1. Bruising
• Minor bruising may result from deep tissue manipulation.
2. Nerve Irritation
• In rare cases, irritation or compression of nerves can lead to tingling, numbness, or weakness.
3. Joint Instability
• Over-manipulation or improper technique may cause joint laxity.
Serious Side Effects (Rare)
1. Stroke or Arterial Damage
• Cervical spine manipulation carries a very small risk of damaging vertebral arteries, leading to serious complications.
2. Fractures or Dislocations
• Rare, but possible if excessive force is applied or if the patient has undiagnosed osteoporosis or other conditions.
Precautions
• Always consult a qualified manual therapist or chiropractor.
• Inform the therapist about your medical history, including any bone conditions, cardiovascular issues, or recent injuries.
• Stop the session immediately if you experience sharp or unusual pain.
When performed correctly, manual therapy is effective and well-tolerated, with minimal risk. Proper communication with your therapist helps reduce potential side effects.
